The site declares itself an installable app: an icon on the home screen, its own colour, opening without an address bar. This is not a separate app to be released in a store — it is the same site, installed. It updates along with the site and needs nobody's approval to publish.
There is no offline mode. Up to version 0.13.24 the app fetched a bundle of recent entries in advance, with their images, so that reading worked without signal. In practice every first visit triggered hundreds of background requests and ate into the reader's mobile data, and on a plan with a CPU limit it could lock the page for the reader themselves. Since 0.13.25 a page loads when the reader asks for it and nothing is fetched in advance; the service worker now serves notifications only.
There is also a mechanism that notices the deployment has moved past an open tab. An app left in the background for a week could show a week-old version and not know it; now it checks the release marker and refreshes itself.
